Facet joints are located on the back of the spine on each side where two adjacent vertebrae meet. The facet joints provide stability and permit the spine to bend and twist. The joint contains cartilage between bones and is surrounded by a sac-like capsule that is filled with synovial fluid.
Facet joint injection is an injection around or into the facet joint. The injection provides information about whether pain is originating from your facet joints. Usually, several injections are undertaken during the same procedure. It is used for localised spinal pain where simpler measures have not helped. It can help your pain by reducing some of the pain signals from the joint and, though pain relief may be short-lived, some people can get significant and long lasting pain relief from these injections.
These procedures are performed while you are awake using local anesthetic (numbing) much like when you see the dentist. If needed, some pain management medications may be given to help you feel more relaxed or comfortable for the procedure.
Facet Joint Pain Treatment Results:
- Back or neck pain may disappear immediately after successful injection because of the anesthetic administered.
- Pain may return as anesthetic wears off
- Steroid takes effect in days after injection
- Steroid will reduce inflammation and pain.
- Injection can provide relief ranges from days and months
