Before using medical marijuana, you have to be a certified user. You have to secure a recognition card and as of December 2018, there are about 37,000 recognition cards all across the United States.
New England Journal of Medicine conducted a survey and they found out that nearly 8 out of 10 doctors approve the use of medical marijuana and a whopping 92% of patients agreed that medical marijuana alleviated their symptoms including chronic pain, arthritis, migraine, and even cancer. Some researchers also claimed that using medical marijuana, deaths caused by opioid misuse has drastically decreased. Unlike opioids, medical marijuana cannot cause deadly overdoses, thus, are said to be safer.
Medical marijuana is said to treat various medical problems such as pain, nausea, loss of appetite, Parkinson’s disease, post-traumatic stress disorder, epilepsy, inflammatory bowel disease, and multiple sclerosis.
But, does it really work?
Marijuana has two active components, THC and CBD.
Tetrahydrocannabinol or THC is the main psychoactive ingredient of cannabis. Aside from giving the user euphoria and a relaxed feeling, THC has been found to have analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, as well as preventing and reducing vomiting.
Cannabidiol, on the other hand, does not provide any feeling of euphoria which makes it safer to use. CBD is also linked in helping treat epilepsy, schizophrenia, other psychotic disorders, type 2 diabetes, inflammatory bowel diseases, some tumors, and drug dependency.
