Botox® for More Than Just Beauty
Botox® is a popular solution for diminishing wrinkles and fine lines, but it has also proven to be effective for much more.
At Regenerative Spine and Pain Institute in Plainsboro and Manalapan Township, New Jersey, Dr. Ronak Patel and our team administer Botox for cosmetic reasons, but we also use it to help with certain health conditions that cause pain.
Botox can treat:
- Migraine
- Nerve pain
- Arthritis
- Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder
- Muscle spasms
- Severe underarm sweating
- Overactive bladder
- Strabismus
- Blepharospasm
The results of your treatment and how long it lasts can vary depending on the condition being treated.
Understanding Botox
Botox is made from a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum. When used in very small doses, it’s considered safe.
The Botox solution can be used to smooth out your facial lines and treat health problems as well. This powerful neurotoxin blocks your nerve signals, which causes a temporary weakening or paralysis of your targeted muscles.
How Botox treats painful issues
When we inject Botox to the affected area, the neurotoxin clings to your nerves, which blocks your neurological signals. It interrupts the messaging that happens between your body and brain, causing your muscles to relax.
When your pain signals get blocked, you don’t feel the uncomfortable symptoms of certain health issues being treated.
Your treatment
Our team guides you through what to expect before, during, and after.
Before
Before your scheduled appointment, we consult with you to learn if you’ve had injections in the previous four months. We also need to know about any medications you’ve been taking.
You may need to pause certain ones for a few days before we treat you. For example, if you take blood thinners, they can cause bruising, so it might be best to stop taking them before your procedure.
It’s also best to refrain from drinking alcohol up to two weeks before your treatment to help reduce your risk of bleeding at the injection sites.
During
Botox is a nonsurgical treatment that involves administering injections to a localized area on your body. Under our care and expertise, you run very little risk of any complications.
After
Botox procedures don’t require any recovery time. You can walk out the door and get back to your normal routine. It’s best to avoid rubbing or massaging the treated area for at least 24 hours so you don’t spread the solution to other areas.
You shouldn’t feel any pain after just a few days and can expect your results to last 3-12 months, depending on the condition we’re treating.
You can continue treatments with our guidance and recommendations.
